What Is Bioactive Substrate?

Bioactive substrate is a specially formulated soil or mix (often coconut-based, soil, leaf litter, and organic matter) designed to support a living miniature ecosystem inside a terrarium. It hosts beneficial microbes, live plants, and a cleanup crew (such as isopods and springtails) that work together to break down waste naturally.

Unlike traditional substrates (paper towels, reptile carpet, or plain coconut fiber), bioactive substrate turns your enclosure into a self-sustaining environment that mimics the reptile’s natural habitat.
